The Umbrian landscape is characterized by medieval hill towns and pastoral
countryside. Neighbor to Tuscany, Umbria's landscape is similarly
picturesque. It seems that everywhere you turn, you run into medieval nooks
and Romanesque churches. Perugia, the region's capital, is home to Umbria's
most notable and arguably its finest building: the Palazzo dei Priori. To
the south, the town of Spoleto is famous for its summer arts festival.
Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis, is home to the Basilica de San
Francesco, frescoed by the artist Giotto. There's much to see in Orvieto,
but most people return from that town praising the food even more than the
architecture!
