If Italy had a foot fetish, Calabria would be its erogenous zone!
It is the
tip of the Italian peninsula and shares a border with Basilicata. Though
it's population density is high, it's lower than the national average. A
region of huge mountains and lowlands, Calabria is one of the most heavily
wooded areas in Italy. The random mountains have exacerbated the region's
isolation from the rest of the country and as a result, there is no single
dialect -- there are three! Though beautiful in its raw simplicity,
Calabria's reputation is darkened by the 'ndrangheta, cousin to the Mafia
(though careful travelers need not be put off by this). Find excellent
olives, citrus and wine grapes here. Major cities include Cosenza,
Catanzaro, La Sila, and Regiio di Calabria.
