"Once an Italian and Jewish stronghold, Bensonhurst has evolved into a lively polyglot community of Chinese, Russian, Italian, Mexican and Middle Eastern immigrants. At the time of the 2000 census, the neighborhood was 51 percent foreign-born, according to an analysis by the city’s Planning Department.

"Howard Feuer, district manager of Brooklyn Community Board 11, a neighborhood panel that advises city government, says the change is evident everywhere. “Take this block the office is on,” he said. “We have a Russian pharmacist and a Russian shoemaker. He just closed down, but we had a Mexican bodega. We also have a Pakastani who owns a small market. An Italian owns the dry cleaners and the Laundromat. And a block from here, we have a mosque.”
